Wan Chai
灣仔
Wan Chai has moved far beyond its old Lockhart Road reputation, with office access, new restaurants, family-friendly pockets and strong rail links around it.
Why choose Wan Chai
Wan Chai is one of the most mixed districts on Hong Kong Island. Around Johnston Road and Queen’s Road East it feels practical and lived-in, Star Street and Lee Tung Avenue are more polished, and the Hopewell Mall area has entered a newer phase with dog-friendly and kid-friendly spaces.
The old Lockhart Road shorthand is dated. That part of Wan Chai still exists, but it no longer defines the whole district. New restaurant concepts open often, and the area now works for a wider range of residents than the old reputation suggests.
The trade-off is choosing which version of Wan Chai you want to be close to. North Wan Chai is useful for the Convention and Exhibition Centre and the East Rail Line. The Star Street and Queen’s Road East side feels more tucked into the slope toward Admiralty and Mid-Levels.
For PolyU students, Wan Chai can be a short route. From Wan Chai station, it is one stop to Admiralty, then two stops on the East Rail Line to Hung Hom. From north Wan Chai, Exhibition Centre station is also walkable and Hung Hom is one stop from there.
